Werk-woord (8): vertrekken
Toen ik eindelijk de knoop had doorgehakt te vertrekken bij een eerdere werkgever, omdat ik geen goed antwoord had op de druk die het werk met zich meebracht, verzuchtte mijn leidinggevende: ‘Werkte iedereen maar met de energie van vertrek, wat geeft dat een ruimte!’ Hij had gelijk. Vanuit de opluchting was er gemak en plezier om die laatste weken tot een succes te maken. Een leerrijke fase. Vertrekken is iets anders dan het huis uitsluipen, schrijft de dichter Rutger Kopland, maar wat is vertrekken wel?
UITWERKEN Er is veel aandacht aan de start in een nieuwe baan, of nieuwe rol. Hooggespannen verwachtingen, nieuwe visitekaartjes, een inwerkprogramma. Wat ik niet vaak tegenkom bij organisaties is een doordacht ‘uitwerkprogramma’. Of het moeten de minder doordachte eruit-werkprogramma’s zijn! Onderzoek maar eens bij mensen die met outplacement te maken hebben gekregen en je herkent het patroon: het werd stil om mij heen, alsof ik een besmettelijke ziekte had en ineens stond ik buiten, ik heb het niet zien aankomen!
AANDACHT Nadenken over vertrekken heeft zowel voor de werknemer als voor de werkgever zin. Zo kom je tot een vertrek dat past in de aard van de relatie die je hebt opgebouwd. Wat doe je nog wel en wat draag je al over. Hoe communiceer je over het vertrek. Mysterie rondom vertrek geeft ruimte om tot eigen verhalen te komen en dat doet de veiligheid voor de achterblijvers geen goed. Vertrekken doe je met aandacht. Met zorg, zo ontstaan er geen rafelige randjes.
STOPPEN Het is een kunst om te beginnen, maar het is een nog grotere kunst om te stoppen, is één van de vele wijsheden in het boek van Wil Derkse, die de leefregels voor Benedictijner monniken inzichtelijk maakt voor leken. En wat zijn de leefregels eenvoudig! Begin zonder dralen, doe wat je wilt doen met aandacht en stop. Gewoon stoppen. Niet achteruitkijken, niet vooruitkijken, gewoon aan de slag. En begin dan opnieuw zonder dralen aan de volgende klus, met aandacht en stop! Enzovoort, totdat er een ritme ontstaat dat je als vanzelfsprekend ervaart. En je met gemak en plezier in het hier en nu aan het werk bent. En weet je wat daar het mooie van is? Dan weet je op een gegeven moment vanzelf wanneer het klaar is. En dan kun je stoppen.
INADEMEN Met werk is het niet anders. Vertrek als het tijd is om te vertrekken. Wanneer dat is, weet je zelf het beste. En ga dan ook. Vertrekken is niet het huis uitsluipen, maar zelfbewust de deur openen, de drempel overstappen, de frisse buitenlucht inademen en voortgaan.

Hallo Sandra,
Een heel verhelderend verhaal! Mijn besluit om met mijn huidige werk te stoppen geeft me eigenlijk meer een schuldgevoel. Toch is beginnen en stoppen een puls in het leven dat er gewoon is, alles begint en eindigt een keer. Dank voor dit inzicht.
