Had Boeddha ook zo'n haast?
Eind december was de tijd van het jaar om tot rust te komen. Dingen af te ronden en te evalueren. Los te laten en af te bouwen. Je ziet ’t ook in de natuur en die is natuurlijk niet gek. De oogst is binnen en de natuur trekt zich terug in haar wortels en maakt zich op voor een periode van rust en kracht verzamelen om straks weer uitbundig tot volle bloei te komen en vruchten te dragen.
TOEREN Nu, halverwege januari, zijn de nieuwjaarsborrels wel zo ongeveer achter de rug. En alles draait weer op volle toeren.
HAAST Wat is er toch eigenlijk met ons – mensen - aan de hand, dat we maar door willen blijven rennen. Constant willen blijven presteren. Je hoeft maar om je heen te kijken en je ziet mensen haast hebben om ergens te komen. Als je oplet kun je bij jezelf ervaren dat dit een besmettelijke ziekte is (en veel gevaarlijker dan die Mexicaanse griep).
DOING Zelf heb ik op dit moment het gevoel in een leegte te zitten. Een stilstaan in het niets. En dat voelt me toch ongemakkelijk! Iets in mij blijft iets willen, blijft willen presteren. Blijft steeds met alles wat ik doe of niet doe, iets willen bereiken. Vraagt zich af of ik wel effectief bezig ben. Of ik wel nuttig genoeg ben. Ik lijk verdorie wel een human doing.
TARGET Ondertussen komt de vraag bij mij op, wat er zo’n slordige 3000 jaar geleden van Boeddha zou zijn geworden, als ie onder die bodhiboom was gaan zitten met vragen als: Wat levert dit zitten hier mij uiteindelijk op? Is dit wat men van mij verwacht? Kan ik hier op den duur wel van leven? Wat zal de buurt wel niet denken, als ik hier zo lang op mijn krent zit te niksen midden op de dag? Kan ik me dit wel veroorloven? Is er niet iets nuttigers dat ik nu kan gaan doen? Is dit wat anderen van mij verwachten? Wegen de kosten en baten eigenlijk wel tegen elkaar op? Of: welke strategie kan ik nu het beste volgen om mijn doel te bereiken? Welke stappen moet ik daarvoor zetten? Haal ik hiermee wel m’n target???
MIS Zou Boeddha daarmee tot verlichting zijn gekomen? Sowieso zo populair zijn geworden als hij nu is? Ook vraag ik me af wat hij wel had, wat ik nu zo duidelijk mis? Een gevoel van vertrouwen?
GEWOONTE Ik vraag me af, waarom stilstaan, pauze nemen, leeg worden, loslaten, ontvankelijk zijn en overgave - zelfs met zo’n krachtig voorbeeld - toch nog zo moeilijk is. Alsof we met z’n allen zwaarbeladen treinen zijn geworden, die maar moeilijk tot stilstand kunnen komen. Alsof we zo gefocust zijn op ‘onze bestemming’, dat we maar blijven doordenderen alsof ons leven ervan afhangt. Of heeft de macht der gewoonte het roer over genomen en zijn we tot willoze slachtoffers van onze eigen verlangens gereduceerd? Waarom hebben we toch zo’n haast? Zo’n haast om ergens te komen, dat we vergeten dat we al ergens zijn.
VOORNEMEN Misschien alsnog een leuk voornemen voor 2010 (in plaats van het voor de hand liggende ‘stoppen met roken’...)? Stoppen met haasten! Met andere woorden: eens af en toe de tijd nemen voor onszelf, voor bezinning, voor rust. Eens even niets willen bereiken en ons voor de verandering openstellen voor wat ons graag wil bereiken. Stilstaan bij wat we hebben. Kunnen we ook ophouden met overleven en weer eens tot Leven komen. Weer human beings zijn. En dan zijn we uiteindelijk later toch nog iets geworden.
